Erik-Jan Bos works for NORDUnet, the Nordic regional R&E Network serving the National R&E Networks in Norway, Finland, Sweden, Denmark, and Iceland. His role at NORDUnet is "Senior Advisor". At NORDUnet, he spent most of his time working on developing and de-risking the Polar Connect Initiative, with the ambition to create a new submarine cable system between Northern Europe and East Asia, through the Central Arctic Ocean. Erik-Jan is an electrical engineer by training with a MSc degree cum laude in computer architecture from Delft University of Technology in The Netherlands. Right after his graduation in 1987, he started to work in the area of planning and provisioning high-end wide area network services for Research & Education. He led his teams to design, implement, and operate world-class state of the art datacomm networks in Europe as well as between Europe and other continents. Erik-Jan is passionate about submarine cable systems, and has the strong opinion that Europe needs to ensure its own digital future. In Erik-Jan’s eyes, European Strategic Digital Autonomy is not just a nice term, it must be a goal to be actively pursued.
