Shiva S. Muthuraj is a Senior Technical Consultant at Worley, specialising in power systems studies, technical due diligence, and renewable energy advisory across Asia Pacific. He has led and supported grid connection studies, feasibility assessments, model validation, and technical advisory assignments for solar PV, BESS, thermal generation, interconnection, and data centre infrastructure projects. His experience includes GPS compliance studies for solar and grid-forming BESS projects in Australia, technical due diligence for solar and solar-plus-BESS assets, independent technical advisory for large-scale solar PV developments, and techno-economic studies for cross-border power transmission projects. His work spans dynamic modelling, energy assessment, contractual risk review, and project management across Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei, Australia, Namibia, and the USA. Shiva holds a PhD in Electrical Engineering, an MSc in Electrical Engineering, and a BEng in Electrical and Electronics Engineering.
Southeast Asia is at a pivotal moment in its energy transition, with growing demand for renewable energy solutions that are both scalable and grid-compatible. This presentation explores the role of hybrid solar PV and battery energy storage systems (BESS) as a key enabler for accelerating solar adoption across the region, addressing the unique technical challenges posed by emerging grid infrastructure and tropical operating conditions.
The session will provide a technical deep dive into hybrid system design, covering DC- and AC-coupled configurations, system sizing considerations, and practical strategies for mitigating common deployment challenges such as grid instability, curtailment, and performance degradation. Attendees will gain insight into how thoughtful engineering decisions at the design stage directly influence long-term system performance and project viability.
Drawing on Worley’s project experience and technical capabilities, the presentation will conclude with real-world case studies that illustrate lessons learned from hybrid system deployments — offering actionable takeaways for developers, utilities, and technical stakeholders looking to advance solar and storage projects in Southeast Asia.
