HYENA (Hydrogen Energy Applications) is a South African deep-tech spin-out from the University of Cape Town, led by experts in hydrogen engineering. The company is committed to transforming stationary off-grid and weak-grid power generation through advanced hydrogen technologies. 

Its flagship innovation, the POWER POD, is a fuel-cell based 5kW alternative to traditional diesel generators. Using locally available LPG as the hydrogen carrier, the POWER POD produces reliable, decentralised electricity without the challenges of conventional fuel cell deployment. 

Unlike diesel generators, the POWER POD operates silently, creates no vibrations, emits no harmful particulates, and requires minimal maintenance. By converting LPG into usable electricity, it offers an eco-friendly and dependable solution for communities and businesses facing unreliable power access. 

Fuel cell technology is ideally suited to the growing global demand for distributed energy solutions. HYENA’s use of LPG as a practical hydrogen source removes one of the key barriers to fuel cell adoption, making clean power both accessible and scalable.
