Mohammed Elewa, UNDP-Green Sharm El Sheikh Project Manager & Advisor to the Minister of Environment, UNDP

Mohammed Elewa, a passionate Environmentalist with the dream of changing the tourism narrative in Egypt, an adventurer, and an advocate for supporting our local communities; safeguarding our natural and cultural heritage. He is the National Project Manager of Green Sharm El Sheikh, a United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) project, aiming to turn the city into a model integrated and ecologically sustainable tourism city with international importance. Previously the project manager for Mainstreaming Biodiversity in Tourism which succeeded in boosting the ecotourism and sustainable practices in Egypt’s tourism by working closely with the Ministry of Environment (MoE) and the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities (MoTA). Throughout his career in the development sector, Mohammed has developed an extended network, demonstrated practical experience and capacity to work in a complex environment involving diverse public/private and local/international stakeholders such as government, international development agencies, financial institutions, private sector, and civil society organizations. Mohammed also has a significant experience in strategic communications planning and communications program implementation for different governmental, international organizations and donors. In his capacity as an advisor to the Minister of Environment for Media & Communications affairs, he has developed the Communication Strategy and Plan for the Egyptian Ministry of Environment, as well as a nationwide environmental awareness campaign (Live Green) in its entirety. He was responsible for Egypt’s representation in CBD COP14, with regards to planning, communications, and management of all related activities, working closely with H.E. Minister of Environment. Additionally, I was managing the planning and implementation of the national awareness campaigns on climate change and the UNFCCC COP27. This included coordinating with national and international media to showcase the Egyptian Ministry of Environment’s efforts during COP27, managing the branding, look, feel and operations for the Green Zone. Ini the COP28 he was responsible for all related media activities showcasing the GoE efforts during the event.  Throughout the MBDT project scope, Mohammed introduced the sustainable label (Green Fins) in the first environmental label in the diving industry in Egyptian, supported in reviewing and updating the Green Star sustainability criteria, introducing sustainability measures to the Egyptian hospitality criteria and developing the Ecolodge operational manual. One of his biggest achievements in MBDT was launching ECO EGYPT, the first nationwide ecotourism awareness campaign in 2020, promoting ecotourism and encouraging sustainable practices in and around protected areas in Egypt.
