The future of energy in the Philippines

The Philippines' Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Programme (NREP) has a clear goal of 50% renewable energy generation by 2040. That's an ambitious goal, but there's no doubt that the Philippines is serious about its clean energy future - 102GW of additional installed energy capacity required is needed by 2040 to reach this milestone, and more than 50GW will be met by new renewable energy projects.  

With a new President, a renewed drive towards reliable, affordable and clean energy for all its citizens, and talk of a liberalisation of foreign investment and ownership requirements in energy, it's one of the most exciting markets in Asia.  

Solar will account for the largest share of new clean generation projects, with 27GW of capacity required, including both huge utilty-scale projects and rooftop solar projects.  

And that's not all - wind, hydro, biomass, geothermal will all play a part, and there's increasing interest around hydrogen fuel cells and nuclear generation too.  

In short, the Philippines is motivated and actively working to secure its energy future.
