Martin Spencer, Technical Manager, Caravan and Motorhome Club

With a degree in automotive engineering, I initially worked in vehicle structural design and testing, then specialised in crashworthiness and particularly occupant safety, mainly airbag optimisation. A change of focus took me to the Caravan and Motorhome Club as Technical Manager, a role which combines oversight of the practical advice offered to the Club's 375,000 member families (around 50:50 split between caravan and motorhome owners) with a significant focus on industry liaison, standards development, political engagement and public affairs. Within a wide range of representative activity, I'd particularly note that I've been Chair of the SMMT Light Trailer and Trailer Equipment Section and an SMMT Executive Committee (formerly Executive Board) member since 2008. I also sit on the SMMT EV and Special Vehicle Builders Groups. In Europe, I'm a member of FIA  Region 1 Transport & Mobility and Legal & Consumer Affairs expert working groups. I'm excited by the transition to zero emission vehicles (I'm an EV driver myself), but I'm passionate to see that everyone is included in that journey, no matter what kind of vehicle they use or how they use it. We must ensure that the diversity within the mobility sector is maintained, as it supports such a wealth of business and leisure activities.
