Prof. Omowunmi Mary Longe is an Associate Professor and Chair of the Smart Power and Energy Systems Research Group in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering Science, University of Johannesburg, South Africa. She received her Doctor Ingeneriae (D.Ing.) in 2017 from the University of Johannesburg in Electrical and Electronic Engineering Science. Her M.Eng. and B.Eng. (Hons) degrees were obtained in Electrical and Electronics Engineering in 2011 and 2001 respectively from the Federal University of Technology, Akure, Ondo State, Nigeria. She is a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), United States and the South African Institute of Electrical Engineers. She is the pioneering IEEE Power and Energy (PES) Women in Power Lead for South Africa and Southern Africa (2019-2021). She is also a member of other notable professional organisations including the Society of Women Engineers, Organisation for Women in Science for the Developing World, Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria, and Nigeria Society of Engineers. Prof. O. M. Longe is also registered with the Engineering Council of South Africa and the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria. Furthermore, she served as Co-Chair of the Session on Green Technologies for Climate Adaptation in the U.S.-Africa Frontiers of Science, Engineering, and Medicine Symposium 2024, Co-chair of Technical Programme Committees of IEEE NIGERCON 2022, Programme Chair for the 1st IEEE PES Women in Power Global Summit in 2021, and TPC member of other professional local and international peer-reviewed conferences. She is the only African mentor in the Global Women's Network for the Energy Transition (2023-2024). She was the Vice Chair of IEEE PES Women in Power executive committee (2022), a member of IEEE PES Long Range Planning Committee (2022), Chair (2022) and Secretary (2020-2021) of the Education Committee, IEEE Smart Village – Africa Working Group. She also founded the first ISV Student Branch in the world at the University of Johannesburg in May 2021. She is an African mentor in the Global Women's Network for the Energy Transition (2023-2024). In August 2024, she won the 2024 Women in Engineering and the Built Environment Lifetime Achievement Award from the University of Johannesburg for a long-standing commitment to excellence in teaching, research, and service in the field of engineering, whose contributions have had a lasting impact on students, colleagues, and the broader community. She has published widely in Scopus/ISI-listed journals and conference proceedings and is also a sought-after reviewer by journals, conferences, and funding organisations. Her research interests include Renewable Energy Technologies, Intelligent Power and Energy Systems 4.0, Electromobility, Demand Side Management, Distributed Energy Generation and Storage, and Smart Energy Management.
