Krystal Barter is a recognised leader in genomics, preventive healthcare, and health system reform, with more than twenty years’ experience driving policy change and advancing patient-centred care. Growing up in a family affected by the BRCA1 gene mutation, Krystal made the decision in her early twenties to start undergoing multiple preventive surgeries, including the recent removal of her ovaries which placed her into surgical menopause. These personal experiences shaped her lifelong commitment to ensuring individuals and families have access to clear, trusted information about their health risks and the pathways available to manage them. Krystal went on to found a hereditary cancer organisation that delivered national education and prevention programs, raised millions for research, and built Australia’s first patient-led community focused on genetic risk for women. Her work now spans government, industry, research, and digital health. She has contributed to significant national reforms including genetic life insurance discrimination legislation, updates to breast density guidelines, and broader initiatives to improve access to innovation and science. Today, as the founder of Humanise Health, Krystal partners with health organisations and companies to develop advocacy strategies, policy frameworks, and lived-experience projects that strengthen systems, products and produce genuine impact. She is widely respected for her ability to connect stakeholders, communicate complex concepts with clarity, and champion the principle that people — their values, choices, and lived experience should remain at the centre of every healthcare decision in our country.
