Charlie Corke, CEO, ClinicalAvatar

Adjunct Professor Charlie Corke AM is a pioneering intensive care physician transforming how healthcare approaches end-of-life conversations through innovative digital solutions. Past President of the College of Intensive Care Medicine and former Director of Intensive Care at Barwon Health (1991-2008), Charlie recognised that traditional advance care planning models couldn't scale to meet population need. This insight led him to found Clinical Avatar—an emotionally intelligent AI platform that guides patients through values-based conversations about their future healthcare preferences. As clinical lead for the Advance Care Planning program for the Barwon South West region, he developed the MyValues approach and 'What Matters Most' tool, pioneering work that laid the foundation for Clinical Avatar's digital facilitator. Clinical Avatar is currently working with Advance Care Planning Australia – our national body for this work – on a feasibility study, showing strong patient, family and clinician acceptance. An accomplished communicator, Charlie has authored Letting Go: How to Plan for a Good Death (Scribe Publications, 2018) and Handing Over: Reflections and Advice for Young Doctors (Erudite Medical Books, 2024), and featured in ABC's documentary 'In the End' and SBS 'Insight'. In 2025, he was awarded the Order of Australia Medal (AM) for services to Intensive Care Medicine. Charlie's work demonstrates how clinically-governed AI can enhance—rather than replace—human connection in healthcare's most sensitive conversations, scaling compassionate care while addressing workforce sustainability challenges.
