Gibela is a black economic empowerment (BEE) rail transport consortium comprising of Alstom and uBumbano Rail. It was established in 2013, as a ring-fenced company for the execution of the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa’s (Prasa) rolling-stock fleet-renewal programme. This contract is meant to deliver 600 trainsets to PRASA and provide technical support and related services.
Gibela aims to elevate commuter rail as the transport mode of choice by contributing to safe and reliable public transport, in line with the transport sector’s objectives. The passenger train sets manufactured by Gibela have all been weighed, measured, and tested to ensure they meet PRASA’s requirements – including being the correct height for station platforms across the country.
Gibela’s mandate is to elevate South Africa’s commuter rail as the transport mode of choice. We are working hard to ensure that we revitalise the country’s rail sector, while driving inclusive economic growth and uplifting communities.
