Bakara was formed in 2010 by two engineers with the goal of providing innovative products and services to the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa and Transnet Engineering.

This was successfully achieved through being the first company to provide on-site maintenance in three regions, becoming a partner in the Bombardiers Africa Alliance consortium on the Durban Resignalling contract, being accredited for electric motor- and wheel repairs and designing, manufacturing, supplying and installing several new products.

Bakara changed its shareholding and the executive in June 2020 as part of a restructuring plan to meet the challenges in the industry and in preparation of the post-Covid-19 pandemic era.
