Josh is Vice President and Global Head of Epidemiology, an Enterprise-wide, world-class center of excellence for innovation in epidemiological science within the Office of the Chief Medical Officer. He also co-chairs the enterprise-wide J&J AI Council. Prior to joining J&J, Josh was the founding Operations Chief and Lead Epidemiologist of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s Sentinel Innovation Center, which works to identify, develop, and evaluate innovative methods to study drug safety and effectiveness using real-world data. He was an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Pharmacoepidemiology and Pharmacoeconomics at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School, and an Associate Professor in the Department of Epidemiology at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. At Harvard Chan, Josh directed the school’s Program in Pharmacoepidemiology and taught Pharmacoepidemiology, Database Analytics in Pharmacoepidemiology, and Topics in Medical Device Comparative Effectiveness Research. He maintains an Adjunct Associate Professor position in the Department of Epidemiology at Harvard Chan. Over the last 20 years, Josh’s research has centered on the development, evaluation, and application of methods for generating post-approval comparative safety and effectiveness evidence for new medical products. Specifically, his work has focused on using healthcare claims data, electronic health records, and other real-world data sources to monitor the use and outcomes of drugs, biologics, and medical devices. He has more than 250 publications in peer-reviewed journals and is author of multiple textbook chapters. Josh is a Fellow of the International Society for Pharmacoepidemiology and serves on the editorial board of Drug Safety.
