Ogan Gurel, CEO and Founder, NovumWaves

Dr. Ogan Gurel is Founder and CEO of NovumWaves, whose mission is to advance and bring to reality terahertz innovation. He is also serves as Chief Medical Officer (Acting) at Nessa Pte Ltd, a Singapore-based innovative technology company which helps people connect with their five senses, in particular hearing and Chair of the Advisory Board for Posture360, a Seoul-based based company that offers innovative products and services helping people to achieve and maintain good posture. He also holds academic appointments as Visiting Professor at the Samsung Advanced Institute of Health Sciences and Technology (SKKU / Samsung Medical Center), Honorary Fellow in the Centre for Neural Engineering at the University of Melbourne, and Visiting Professor at the Libera Accademia Belle Arti (Brescia, Italy). Previously, Dr. Gurel served as Chief Innovation Officer at the startup incubator / Fab Lab Campus D, and over four years as a Director in the CTO office and Open Innovation group at the Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology (SAIT). Prior to that, he was VP & Medical Director at Sg2 and an Associate at Booz, Allen & Hamilton. Dr. Gurel’s business experience includes executive, marketing, clinical and R&D domains, with sector expertise in medical devices, digital / mHealth, healthcare IT, medical imaging, and biopharma while his scientific research focuses on structural biology, specifically protein electrodynamics and terahertz medicine.  Dr. Gurel holds an MD (Alpha Omega Alpha) from the Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons and an MPhil (Biochemistry & Molecular Biophysics, studying cytokines with Prof. Wayne Hendrickson). While an undergraduate at Harvard (BA cum laude in Biochemical Sciences), he conducted molecular dynamics research with Martin Karplus (2013 Nobel Prize in Chemistry). His extensive teaching experience includes cellular & molecular biology, neuroanatomy, bioinformatics and mathematical modeling at Columbia, Roosevelt, Harvard, and SAIHST among other leading institutions. He has also taught the acclaimed Mini-MD program at locations worldwide, including Seoul, San Jose, Dallas, Singapore, Melbourne, and Italy. Along with peer-reviewed scientific publications, several patents, a novel (Waves), syndicated columns, and newspaper contributions, Dr.  Gurel has presented numerous invited talks and keynotes at leading institutions and global conferences covering healthcare trends, digital & mobile health, protein electrodynamics, the future of medicine, healthcare market dynamics, and innovation in general.
