Biography: Simon Fletcher Brand Ambassador, Europe - GCRE Founder, Fletch Rail Advisory Former Director Europe and Chief Standardisation Officer, UIC (the International Union of Railways) Simon Fletcher has been a railway professional since 1977 and has a vast array of practical and strategic experience in operational, safety and standardisation topics in local, regional, national and international positions. This has included 10 years at Eurostar from conception to inception of the operational framework for the service and a period as the person with responsibility for the writing, reviewing and publication of the entire national suite of operating rules, regulations and standards in the UK. He joined the UIC in 2003. Over the intervening years he has been responsible for: establishing the UIC’s safety dossier and supporting unit at the time when the European Safety Directive was emerging; leading the preparation of the first version of the OPE TSI; turning the spotlight on the road/rail interface at level crossings (the father of ELCAD & ILCAD); overhauling the UIC’s portfolio of railway publications (specifications guidelines and operational solutions) and the creation of the IRSs to replace the Leaflets. Appointed a member of the UIC Board of Directors in 2009, his role as Director Europe encompassed leadership of the UIC’s European portfolio and the interface with the 120 European member railway companies as well as being the ‘man in Brussels’ for the UIC. The points are now set for a change of routing and Fletch Rail Advisory has been formed with a focus on advocating the innovative railway of tomorrow, advising on railway operational and safety topics, document preparation and review as well as compering, moderating, chairing events, and preparing and delivering podcasts and voiceovers.
