Mr. Zakhele Gilbert Thwala is the current Deputy Director General: Civil Aviation at the Department of Transport.  His career in Aviation began when an opportunity arose in 1988, for pilot training in Ethiopia, Addis Ababa, under the auspices of United Nations Development Agency (UNDP) at Ethiopian Airline Aviation Academy.  He took it and completed his studies in 1991. In 1993, he joined South African Airways to keep current his license.  
In Aviation he has worked for the following companies, Ethiopian Airlines, South African Airway, South Africa Air force (LT Col), Denel Aviation, South African Civil Aviation Authority and currently at the Department of Transport.
He holds the following qualifications, among others; Diploma in Avionics, (Ethiopian Airlines), Type 2 LWTR licence (Ethiopian Airlines), Diploma in Management (Henley), Executive Development Programme (Wits Business School), Management Advanced Programme (Wits Business School), MBA (Henley).
