FreshDirect is a thriving e-grocer based in Long Island City, New York that also serves portions of New Jersey, Connecticut and the Philadelphia areas. Founded in 2002, the company allows users to place orders online for high quality food that is straight from farm to table. The company relies on a mobile fleet of more than 320 trucks and personnel running two shifts daily to bring the freshest meat and produce to its customers, often in challenging urban environments. The fleet ranges from standard delivery trucks to tractor-trailers. Mike Derrig, director of fleet operations for FreshDirect, is charged with overseeing the performance, efficiency and utilization of that fleet. Derrig initially sought new ways to encourage safer driver behaviors while ensuring the freshness of the delivered product.
