Australian Flow Batteries (AFB) is an Australian clean-energy technology company, founded in 2022 and headquartered in Western Australia, focused on delivering reliable off-grid and long-duration energy solutions for residential, commercial, industrial and remote applications. AFB designs and deploys modular, containerised power systems that integrate solar generation, battery storage and control systems to provide 24/7 energy independence, particularly where grid access is limited and/or diesel reliance is high.
AFB’s offering spans both long-duration vanadium flow batteries (VFBs) and lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery systems, deployed according to use case. Its all-in-one off-grid container solutions use LFP batteries for compact, fast-deployment applications, while VFBs are applied where long life, deep cycling and large-scale energy storage are required. This technology-agnostic approach allows AFB to optimise safety, cost and performance rather than forcing a single chemistry. AFB’s solutions are increasingly applied across agriculture, mining, defence, disaster response and remote communities, and the company is progressing plans to expand local manufacturing to support Australia’s energy transition and export markets.
With access to the IP behind a unique hydrometallurgical process AFB can now provide low-energy pit-to-battery VFB solutions at scale. As the lead respondent in an indigenous led consortium AFB are in prime position with the recent EOI for the WA State Government backed $150m 50MW/500MWH Kalgoorlie Vanadium Big Battery.
