Theuns Ehlers, Resource And Project Finance, ABSA Capital

Theuns is a qualified Chartered Accountant and heads up Absa’s Resource & Project Finance business, which includes advisory, debt arranging, underwriting and direct lending to clients in the mining, oil & gas, power, infrastructure and industrial sectors across the entire African continent. 
Theuns joined the bank in 1998 and is regarded as one of the most experienced project finance dealmakers in the African market, with over 20 years specific experience in Africa across multiple industry sectors. In the mining sector, Theuns has lead the financing of greenfields and brownfields developments in the gold, platinum, copper, manganese, iron ore, ferrochrome, coal and diamond sectors. His experience in oil and gas includes structuring financing for onshore and offshore upstream oil developments, through project finance, reserve based lending and prepayment structures. In the infrastructure sector, Theuns has played a leading role in the financing for toll roads, rail projects (industrial and commuter), water projects, social and PPP projects in the healthcare and accommodation sectors. In the power sector, Theuns played a leading role in the development of the South African renewable energy program, and subsequently during the past 7 years since the launch of the program, successfully lead the bank in its quest to become one of the leading arrangers and providers of financing to renewable energy projects on the continent, with more than USD4 billion of financing arranged for the banks clients for more than 3GW of renewable energy projects successfully closed.
From a country perspective, Theuns has successfully closed financings in South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Zambia, Tanzania, Kenya, Ghana, Uganda and Nigeria. Before joining Absa in 1998, 
Theuns started his working career in 1992, at PricewaterhouseCoopers, based in Pretoria and London.
