Dr Charles Karl has over 35 years’ experience in Intelligent Transport Systems. He is responsible for the technical oversight of NTRO’s activities in road network operations, freight and heavy vehicles, ITS and has extensive experience in field operational testing. Since 2015, Charles has led ARRB’s work in connected and automated vehicles with the Volvo XC90 driverless vehicle demonstration in Adelaide, the Eastlink AV trials, La Trobe University Autonobus trial, Yarra Trams CITS priority trial, mining automation, agricultural automation and heavy vehicle automation for transport operators and the Australian Army. His work has included traffic data fusion, travel time modelling, network performance monitoring, incident management, C-ITS, telematics and traveller information. Charles led teams which developed the specifications for the Australian regulatory telematics (the Intelligent Access Program, on-board mass monitoring, electronic work diaries, speed management and heavy vehicle charging architectures. For the last 17 years, Charles has been a Member of Standards Australia IT-023 and an Australian delegate at ISO TC204 on ITS. Charles has published over 120 technical papers and reports, and two books. The focus of his recent efforts has been towards laying the foundations for the future transport and mobility environment through international collaboration and grounded research.
