Thobeka Mchunu, Technical Advisor, GIZ

Thobeka Mchunu is a Senior Technical Advisor for Regulatory Framework at GIZ, focusing on green hydrogen and Power-to-X. Through GIZ’s project Promoting a Green Hydrogen Economy in South Africa, she supports stakeholders in shaping an enabling environment for this emerging sector. Passionate about Africa’s role in the global energy transition, she is a certified PtX, and shipping trainer. Thobeka also serves as Regional Director for Southern Africa at Women in Green Hydrogen, mentoring young women, and contributes as a mentor in the African Hydrogen Fellowship.

 She founded Generation Green Impact, a youth initiative that educates and empowers learners from disadvantaged communities on the energy transition and opportunities in green hydrogen. Her leadership has been recognized globally: she received the Woman in Hydrogen of the Year Award at the 2024 Global African Hydrogen Summit and was named among the Top 50 Pan-African Female Leaders by AOW Investing in African Energy and Lean In Southern Africa Leaders in 2025. She holds an MBA and Postgraduate Diploma in Business Administration from Wits Business School, and a BTech in Mechanical Engineering from Tshwane University of Technology
