Alex Bica, Global Head of Early Development Safety, CSL Behring

Alex Bica serves as the Head of Early Development at CSL Behring in Marburg, Germany. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Public Health in London, United Kingdom, a Fellow of the Academy of Science in Siena, Italy and a Faculty Member at the University of Siena. Dr. Bica earned his medical degrees from the University of Medicine Iasi, Romania, in 2006 and specialized in infectious diseases in 2008 and medical epidemiology in 2012. He holds a Master of Public Health (MPH) with a focus on Health Management, Bioinformatics, and Biostatistics. Additionally, he completed an executive MSc in Vaccinology and Pharmaceutical Clinical Development with honours from the University of Siena, Italy, in 2016. Currently, Dr. Bica oversees the safety assessments of CSL's new drug and vaccine candidates during early-stage development, leading a team of early development safety leads. Previously, he headed the Immunology Therapeutic Area at CSL Behring and managed the monitoring and continuous assessment of safety profiles across a wide range of therapeutics. He has conducted numerous clinical research activities in therapeutic areas including Immunology, Infectious Diseases, Respiratory, and Transplant. Before joining CSL Behring, Dr. Bica led clinical and pharmaco-epidemiological research on prophylactic mRNA-based and recombinant vaccines targeting diseases such as rabies, influenza, meningitis, shigella, and various oncological indications at GSK and CureVac AG. Earlier in his career, he served as Head of the Epidemiology and Disease Control Department at the National Public Health Authority of Romania within the Ministry of Health. In this role, he coordinated national programs on immunization, infectious disease control, and epidemic and pandemic preparedness. Dr. Bica has collaborated extensively with international organizations, including the World Health Organization (WHO), the European Medicines Agency (EMA) and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), on clinical and epidemiological research as well as public health initiatives related to migrant health. His academic contributions include numerous publications on topics spanning public health, infectious diseases, epidemiology, and rare diseases.
