Makoto Shibata, Executive Fellow, Japan Digital Design (A Member of MUFG)

Mr. Shibata was leading the MUFG bank’s R&D initiatives in emerging technology and planning of online / mobile financial services, until Sep. 2018, and now with JDD, innovation arm of MUFG, and Oxford University as an academic visitor at St. Antony’s College, to conduct research on technology trend in financial services. 

With over 20 years of digital banking and e-business experience, he has been involved in a wide range of developmental projects on new channels for retail and corporate customers. He has also helped pave the way for the bank’s push into financial technology, or fintech.

His career in the banking sector has also included stints in corporate planning, accounting, corporate finance, and retail customer services.

Mr. Shibata is also a founding member of Finovators, a pro-bono organisation that mentors fintech start-ups in Japan. He is also an active participant in thought leadership events, where he speaks on topics from digital innovation to fintech.

Mr. Shibata has a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from University of Tokyo and a Masters of Science in Development Economics from Oxford University.
