Robert Chen, Scientific Director, Brighton Collaboration, a program of the Task Force for Global Health

Dr. Chen has been active in research of vaccines and vaccine-preventable diseases for over 35 years, mostly at the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).  He played key roles in modernizing the vaccine safety infrastructure in the U.S. and elsewhere, including the creation of the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS), the Vaccine Safety Datalink (VSD) project, the Clinical Immunization Safety Assessment (CISA) Network, the Brighton Collaboration, the Safety Injection Global Network (SIGN), and Vaccine Special Interest Group (VAXSIG) of the International Society of Pharmacoepidemiology. He has authored or coauthored 280 publications.  Dr. Chen is currently the Scientific Director of the Brighton Collaboration.

The Safety Platform for Emergency Vaccines (SPEAC) Project

  • The Brighton Collaboration was created in 2000 with the goal of building trust in the safety of vaccines via rigorous science.
  • The Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) and the Brighton Collaboration launched the Safety Platform for Emergency vACcines (SPEAC) Project on May 28, 2020.
  • SPEAC aims to support the emerging CEPI portfolio by creating practical solutions for harmonized safety assessment of CEPI vaccines by working:
    • To enhance vaccine safety assessment across CEPI development programs.
    • To harmonize vaccine safety monitoring during CEPI preclinical and clinical trials.
    • To provide a continuous improvement framework for the SPEAC program.
