Joern Schmitz, Department Head, Fraunhofer I.M.E.

Dr. Joern Schmitz heads the Department of Immunotherapy at the Fraunhofer Institute for Molecular Biology and Applied Ecology in Aachen, Germany. Dr. Schmitz trained in immunology and virology at the Bernhard-Nocht-Institute in Hamburg, Germany and at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Harvard Medical School in Boston, USA. As Associate Professor in Medicine, he gained extensive expertise in passive immunization strategies using monoclonal antibodies in preclinical animal models and in the impact of Fc receptor polymorphisms on antibody function. Under his leadership, the department of immunotherapy focuses its scientific interest on mAbs for immunodiagnostic and immunotherapeutic approaches with a main emphasis on oncological and infectious diseases.
