Mr Emirsyah Satar, Chief Executive Officer, Garuda Indonesia

On his appointment as President and CEO of Garuda Indonesia in March 2005, Emirsyah Satar became one of the youngest airline Chief Executive Officers of an airline in the Asia Pacific region.   Prior to joining the airline industry, Emirsyah Satar had already earned a reputation as an experienced banker and financier.   Born on 28 June 1959, Emirsyah Satar received his degree in Accounting from the University of Indonesia in 1978. Previously, he had completed academic programs at the Sorbonne University in Paris.   Mr. Satar began his career in the financial industry as an auditor at Price Waterhouse Cooper. He quickly assumed key positions in several multinational companies in Citibank N.A, Jan Darmadi Group and Niaga Finance, Hong Kong.   In 1998, Emirsyah Satar returned to Indonesia to become EVP Finance for Garuda Indonesia. During that time, he played a major role in the airline’s financial restructuring process carried out in 2001, which amounted to US$ 1.8 billion. Thanks to his invaluable banking and finance experience, he was instrumental in helping Garuda Indonesia avoid bankruptcy. In recognition of this achievement he received “Financial Restructuring of the Year” by the New York “Travel Finance” magazine.   Over the last five years under the leadership of Emirsyah Satar the airline has undergone a major financial and operational turnaround culminating in the IPO of Garuda Indonesia in February 2011. Garuda Indonesia’s success has also been recognized by being named “World’s Most Improved Airline 2010” by SkyTrax Research and “Turnaround Airline of the Year 2010” by the Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation. Similarly, on a personal level, his leadership qualities have not gone unnoticed. In 2009, Emirsyah Satar was awarded “the Best of the Best CEO” by Warta Ekonomi magazine and “Marketer of the Year” by MarkPlus Inc. A year later in 2010, he was awarded yet more accolades, i.e. “People of the Year” by one of the biggest local newspapers, Seputar Indonesia; “Orient Aviation Person of the Year” by a widely respected publication in the Asia Pacific region, Orient Aviation Magazine; and “Asia Pacific Entrepreneurship Award” in the Outstanding Entrepreneur category by Enterprise Asia, a non governmental organization founded by a group of entrepreneurs dedicated to developing entrepreneurship across Asia Pacific region.   In 2008, Mr. Satar was elected as the Chairman of INACA (Indonesian National Air Carrier Associations). Mr. Satar is also actively involved in Indonesian Chamber of Commerce as Vice Chairman for International Economic Cooperation. His responsibility includes developing cooperation of Indonesian Chamber of Commerce with other international trade associations and institutions.   Emirsyah Satar has been a member of IATA Board of Governor since 2010. Being the Board of Governor member, Mr. Satar involves in formulating direction and guidance of IATA industry committee and subsidiary bodies.
