Alexandra van Huffelen has been the General Director of GVB, the body that manages Amsterdam’s public transport, since June 1 2014.
Van Huffelen was born in Leiden on 21 July 1968.
She studied Public Administration at Leiden University and Erasmus University Rotterdam and went on to work at the Ministry of Housing during the 1990s.
Between 2000 and 2010, she worked at the energy company Essent, where her roles included director of the Deutsche Essent business unit and New Energy.
After the municipal elections of 2010, van Huffelen was appointed as an alderman in Rotterdam. Her portfolio was Sustainability, the City Centre and Outdoor Space, a post she held representing D66. Her responsibilities included the sustainable development of the city, the redevelopment of the city centre, managing and maintaining public spaces and creating more green space in and around Rotterdam.
Van Huffelen holds various ancillary positions. She is a member of the board of Railforum, a member of the Supervisory Board of the Catharina Hospital in Eindhoven, and a member of the Supervisory Board of the Waarborgfonds voor de zorg [Care Guarantee Fund].
