TUCA

Site visits at MetroRail to Crossrail's The Tunnelling and Underground Construction Academy (TUCA)

The Tunnelling and Underground Construction Academy (TUCA) is a purpose-built training facility that supports the key skills required to work in tunnel excavation, underground construction and infrastructure. The volume of tunnelling and underground construction work taking place in the Capital over the next decade is unprecedented. The Thames Tideway Tunnel, National Grid and EDF electricity cable tunnels all require significant numbers of skilled people, and in the longer term, projects such as Crossrail 2 and High Speed 2.

By building and establishing TUCA, Crossrail is contributing to the development of new qualifications and Health and Safety standards across the industry. TUCA ensures that Crossrail has the skills needed for its construction and will continue after the Crossrail project is complete as a specialist training centre for other tunnelling projects.

Visitors will receive an update on the Crossrail project followed by a guided tour of the facilities such as: plant maintenance; simulated pit-top / pit-bottom; Sprayed Concrete Lining laboratory; and concrete testing laboratory. TUCA is located at Aldersbrook Sidings on the border of Newham and Redbridge. The site is a ten minute walk from Ilford station making it easily accessible by train. Trains run regularly from Liverpool Street station. Further information on TUCA can be found on the Crossrail website .

Tottenham Court Road

Tottenham Court Road site visit with TfL at MetroRail confernece and exhibition

Tottenham Court Road is a major interchange and a gateway to one of the UK’s largest retail areas. The station was not designed to cope with the 150,000 passenger journeys that are made now to, from, and through the station every day. When Crossrail becomes operational, that number is expected to rise to 200,000 journeys per day. Tottenham Court Road is benefiting from more than £1bn of investment towards a new Crossrail station and a Tube station that will be rebuilt by the end of 2016. The works at TCR will include construction of a new larger ticket hall, new access to the Northern and Central line platforms to reduce congestion, new lifts providing step-free access from the street to all platforms, new escalators serving both Northern Line and Crossrail services and general improvements such as better lighting and CCTV cameras to deliver a better experience to customers.

Conditions of attending : Only 6 delegates can be accommodated, full PPE will be supplied – names/sizes must be given.  Confirmation of names/sizes must be received by Thursday 5th March.  Once names have been given no changes will be accepted.  Delegates need to bring photo ID.
