Dr Christof Walter is an agri-supply chain expert and consultant advising the on all aspects of sustainable agriculture, from muddy boots to board room.

He works with clients in the branded goods, retail and financial industries and helps them with their sustainable sourcing strategies; ESG, standards and certification; due diligence; risks and opportunities in their agricultural supply chains; developing new sources of supply; and managing smallholder farmers in commercial supply chains. His clients are mostly large multinationals, including Unilever, Deutsche Bank, Marks & Spencer, BAT and SABMiller.

Before founding his own company in 2012 Christof had a twelve year career in Unilever and was instrumental in creating the company’s industry-leading sustainable sourcing and smallholder farmer programmes. He’s worked around the world and has a strong network of local contacts in Africa, Asia, Europe and the Americas. Christof also advises the Indian tea industry, the Global Shea Alliance and is founding director of the Cool Farm Alliance, which aims at reducing the environmental impact of farming.

Christof has a PhD in horticultural sciences from the University of Hannover, Germany and studied agronomy, ecology, economics and climate sciences. He is the vice chair of the governing panel of CCAFS, the CGIAR’s Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security Program; and sits on the Sustainability Council of Earth Capital Partners LLP, an specialised ethical equity investor.
