Carla started her career as one of the first female underground Mining Geologists at JCI (Ltd) Westonaria Goldmine, South Deep Shaft, in Westonaria, after completing her B.Sc (Hons) degree in Geology and Zoology at the University of Stellenbosch. Where after, she was promoted to Senior Exploration Geochemist, where she worked on various Exploration Projects in the Northern Cape, Swaziland, Ghana, Zambia, Tanzania, Ethiopia and Madagascar. During this time she completed diplomas in Hydrogeology, Laterite Geochemistry, Environmental Management, Project Management and Database Development and Management. She then shifted her focus to Environmental Management and continued her career at SRK Consulting as a Senior Environmental Scientist where she specialised in EIA’s, EMRP’s, SEA’s, Closure Permitting and Water License Applications. With this experience she returned to the team at South Deep Gold Mine as their Environmental Manager. After the birth of her first child she took on the challenge of re-establishing the Northern Areas Branch of the Wildlife and Environmental Society of South Africa (WESSA) as their Regional Manager. She did her Master’s Degree in Sustainable Development specialising in Environmental Management and Climate Change at the University of London – SOAS while establishing herself as an Independent Consultant. She is currently the Programme Manager at the Mine Water Coordinating Body (MWCB) that facilitates sustainable mine closure through the management of mine water.
