Dr Dave Collins BVSC FANZCVS
Specialist in Small Animal Medicine
Dave grew up in Manly, the son of a veterinarian who established Seaforth Vets in the 1970s. He graduated from Sydney University in 1995 and worked in Melbourne and the UK before returning home to practice as a GP vet at Seaforth. He went on to specialise in small animal internal medicine, passing his ANZCVS membership exams in feline medicine (2006) and emergency and critical care (2011), and his fellowship exams in small animal medicine in 2013. During his training he developed a strong interest in diagnostic ultrasound and echocardiography, which remain central to his practice today.
Dave founded The Pet Specialists referral hospital in 2015, and for the past 11 years has run DC Mobile Vet Specialist, providing mobile internal medicine, ultrasound and echocardiography services across Sydney. He also founded Vets on Tour veterinary conferences in 2005. He is a co-owner of Seaforth Vets and his main clinical interests are hepatology, gastroenterology and cardiorespiratory medicine. Outside work he is a keen surfer, skier and cyclist.
A practical 30-minute update on recognising, investigating and managing chronic hepatitis in dogs, with a comparative look at Wilson disease as the closest human analogue to canine copper-associated hepatitis.
Learning objectives — by the end of the session, attendees will be able to:1. Recognise the clinical and clinicopathological patterns that should prompt a chronic hepatitis workup rather than repeated ALT rechecks2. Identify breeds at risk of copper-associated hepatitis and understand the COMMD1 / ATP7B story3. Describe the role and limitations of liver biopsy, and the value of quantitative hepatic copper quantification4. Apply a rational, staged treatment approach — chelation, dietary restriction, immunomodulation, hepatoprotectants — and know where the evidence is thin5. Draw practical parallels between canine copper-associated hepatitis and human Wilson disease that inform prognosis and client communication
