Mark founded Solo in Orkney in 2015 to develop a disruptive new business model based on delivering a 100%-renewable future through Virtual Power Plant technology. Solo installs batteries and other flexibility assets such as smart EV chargers at no up-front cost to home and business consumers. Our FlexiGrid platform aggregates these assets to operate as Virtual Power Plant, balancing intermittent local renewable generation to reduce and ultimate eliminate dependence on fossil fuel generation. Our model delivers lower energy bills to consumers while Solo recovers the cost of our assets over time through flexibility trading.
Solo is the lead commercial partner in the ReFlex project in Orkney which has secured £14m in UKRI grant funding to demonstrate the energy system of the future. The project will involve rollout of up to 1000 domestic batteries, 500 EVs with smart charging as well as larger scale battery and hydrogen fuel cell deployment to create an Integrated Energy System in Orkney across the power heat and transport sectors, powered by local renewable generation
