SMS is a leader in the UK’s smart meter rollout with over 4 million meters installed to date. Building on this platform of energy digitalisation, SMS is currently developing a range of new energy services and consumer propositions focussed on accelerating the UK’s net zero transition through the power of energy data and flexibility. FlexiGrid is SMS’s aggregation platform designed to unlock the value of small-scale Behind-the-Meter flexibility. FlexiGrid monitors and controls BTM assets such as solar + storage, EV chargers and flexible electric heating, operating them as a Virtual Power Plant to maximise savings for end consumers, and generate revenue from participating in grid service markets such as Frequency Response, Balancing Mechanism and Local Flexibility markets. Solo Energy was acquired by SMS PLC in 2019 to bring aggregation capability in-house, and accelerate SMS’s development of Behind-the-Meter funded-asset / flexibility propositions. Most recently, FlexiGrid facilitated participation of nearly 50,000 domestic consumers participating in National Grid ESO’s Demand Flexibility Service. In addition to facilitating manual demand reduction consumers, FlexiGrid also managed participation of hundreds of domestic battery customers, where customers typically saw 10 times the savings of manual turn down customers during DFS events.
