Lightsource Labs is an energy technology business wholly owned by the global solar company, Lightsource bp. Lightsource Labs was founded in 2016 to take advantage of the opportunities offered by the transition to a sustainable, decentralised, digitalised energy system. Lightsource Labs’ smart energy management solutions unlock flexibility behind-the-meter and within distribution networks to accelerate the transition to a low-carbon, sustainable energy economy.  

Lightsource Labs launched its energy management technology – Tribe – in the UK in 2020. The business is currently working with a range of channel partners to help maximise self-consumption within residential properties while also unlocking and monetising the value of using distributed energy assets for balancing and flexibility services outside the home.   

Tribe consists of a hardware Hub and smartphone App through which users can monitor, control and schedule devices in the property to reduce energy costs. Tribe incorporates machine-learning algorithms and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to optimise when devices consume and store electricity, ensuring customers maximise use of either free solar energy or low-cost electricity from the grid. Lightsource Labs has also developed Virtual Power Plant (VPP) technology to enable aggregation and control of fleets of Tribe systems to deliver value to DNOs, System Operators and Utility partners ‘outside’ the property.
