The South African Renewable Energy Technology Centre (SARETEC) is a state-of-the-art national renewable energy training facility located in Cape Town, South Africa. An initiative of the Department of Higher Education & Training (DHET) and managed by the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT), SARETEC trains on a range of solar related training offerings for industry and also with industry. SARETEC’s mandate from Government is also to partner with private sector training providers on the use of its facility and in this regard has joint training contracts with Maxx Solar, SMA and Happy Solar.
SARETEC together with its skills development partner MerSeta are the custodians of the South African Solar PV Technician Qualification which was developed at the National Qualifications Framework (NQF) Level 5. Module 2 of this South African Qualification Authority (SAQA) accredited qualification was developed for electricians to provide skills for them to operate as competent and recognised Solar PV Installers. This was done in partnership with GIZ, GreenCape and the South African Photovoltaic Industry Association (SAPVIA). Following the one week training for Solar PV Installers which was developed by DGS Berlin in line with the SAQA qualification and German DIN standards; participants remain at SARETEC to complete a 2-day PV GreenCard assessment which allows them to register on the SAPVIA PV GreenCard website for Solar PV Installers.
SARETEC is currently partnering with training service providers in the Northern Cape to provide other modules of the Qualification to Solar Farm Operators.
