Hardware-based blockchain: A technology to enhance governmental identity solutions?

Blockchain is a technology that can be used for more than just the implementation of crypto currencies. Blockchain-based system architectures are suited for a variety of governmental ID use cases bringing significant added value to projects. After recapitulating the main principles of a blockchain and explaining ID specific challenges, the main part of the speech describes the advantages a blockchain can bring for an ID project: The reduction of overall infrastructure and system costs and the increased trust of citizens and stakeholders. To take full benefit of these advantages and learning from past experiences, it is recommended to use hardware based “trust anchors” keeping private keys safe and secure and further reducing the risk of manipulation. The last section of the speech focuses on a real life use case demonstrating how blockchain can improve ID schemes.
