Dion Chamberlain is the Manager Product of Development for Identity at the Department of Internal Affairs (DIA), where he has worked since 2003 in roles spanning Passports, Citizenship, Digital Identity and Civil Registration.
Dion is responsible for the development of new identity products for New Zealanders – a function that includes systems thinking and user-based design to put customer at the centre of development. His role also oversees business intelligence and innovation, new product and service development, information sharing services, and working in public and private sector partnerships. He has been closely involved in the development and delivery of highly successful initiatives, including RealMe digital identity, the introduction of e-Passports, the use of facial recognition technology in automated issuance processes, and the world’s first fully online Passport renewal service.
Dion is currently the Secretary of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Implementation and Capacity Building Working Group (ICBWG), which is focussed on improving capability of travel document issuance authorities and border control agencies globally. He is also the Chair of the ICAO New Technologies Working Group Policy Sub-Group for the Development of the Digital Travel Credential.
