INTI International University-Malaysia

Geetha Subramaniam, Professor, INTI International University-Malaysia

Dr. Geetha is a Professor in INTI International University, Malaysia. She graduated from University of Malaysia (UM) in 1999 with Ph.D. in Medical Virology. She is a dedicated academician with more than 10 years of experience in teaching, and more than 30 years of research experience with more than 50 publications to date. Her main research is focused on antibiotic resistance in pathogens, where determining the susceptibility profile of these pathogens to commonly used antibiotics is an important aspect of medical health and could influence the treatment options for these infectious pathogens. She is also involved in screening indigenous herbs for antimicrobial activity whereby this research could be translated into suitable options to eventually replace or potentiate the use of antibiotics. Furthermore, Prof. Geetha also has a keen interest in utilization of agro-economic waste for mushroom cultivation in which she has an Industrial Grant to carry out this research. During the pandemic, Prof. Geetha and her research team focused on the growing issue on vaccine hesitancy against the COVID-19 vaccines and has since published 3 SCOPUS-cited papers on this subject. Her dedication to research has led to an award by Asia International Research Awards in Microbiology in 2023. She has also been invited as a Keynote speaker in several international conferences in India, Uzbekistan, Prague and Indonesia. Prof. Geetha has inculcated the industry-to-classroom knowledge in her teaching through her own experiences having been in a diagnostic laboratory for 6 years. Furthermore, as a keen researcher, she has tried to inculcate her passion for research in her students by supervising them during their final year projects, several of which have been published in SCOPUS-cited journals. Prof. Geetha attributes her success as an educator to her students and admits that the most wonderful thing is the quality of the students’ responses to her questions. Her dedication to teaching was recognized in a national-level teaching excellence award in 2022 by the Private Education Cooperation. In addition to teaching and research, Prof. Geetha’s dedication to her job led to her being appointed as Head of Programme for the Life Sciences Division in 2015, just 1 year after being in INI IU. This was followed by her appointment as Dean of the faculty in 2022 to 2024, and subsequently as Interim Pro-Vice Chancellor for Academic Operations from 2023 to 2024. Prof. Geetha is also a strong advocate for Safety and Health and led the University to successfully obtain the ISO45001:2018 certification in Occupational Safety and Health, as the Lead Auditor for OSH. She also holds several positions as a Senate member and Deputy Chair for Safety, Security and Health Committee for the university. Prof. Geetha is so an advocate for ESG where she firmly believes in inculcating the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) in the academic curriculum for a more sustainable education in INTI as well as serving as a ESG Task force member. This enables her to promote sustainable education in the university. Prof. Geetha is currently involved in a multicenter project on sustainable education to drive sustainable education among private and public institutions in Malaysia.
