Founded in 1965 under Mr Sng Yew Chong's leadership, the Science Teachers Association of Singapore (STAS) is currently chaired by Mr Jay Westly Mahardale, Principal of Northland Primary School. STAS aims to advance science education and foster educational, professional, social, and cultural interests among its members.
Since its establishment, STAS has enhanced Singapore's educational landscape through various professional development initiatives and educational programmes. A notable milestone was the 1982 launch of the Singapore Young Scientist Cards Scheme with SAAS and Science Centre Singapore, which has reached over one million students.
STAS collaborates closely with key educational institutions including Ministry of Education (Singapore), the Academy of Singapore Teachers, Science Centre Singapore, the National Institute of Education (NIE), and various Science Associations under the Singapore National Academy of Science. The association runs both annual programmes (Young Scientist Badge Scheme, Overseas Learning Journeys) and biennial events (Outstanding Science and STEM Teachers' Award, Singapore Youth STEM Fair, Singapore International Science Teachers' Conference).
The association's achievements include the 1998 Singapore Excellence Award for outstanding TIMSS performance and multiple Partner of AST Awards since 2012, reflecting its ongoing commitment to teachers' professional development.
