ABOUT

The Big Idea

The Australian Government is committed to rolling out a new decentralised digital ID platform called Govpass. At the same time, several states are trialing new mobile drivers licence schemes and the Department of Immigration and Border Protection is increasingly moving towards ePassports and biometric scanning. There is a groundswell of interest about new ID technology and everyone is talking about the possibilities and opportunities surrounding new ID management solutions.

Digital ID is back on the agenda in a big way!

This is not just happening in Australia - several other developed countries (USA, UK, Netherlands, Canada) are rolling out similar systems. The idea is to provide users with a better way to prove ID, establish trust, reduce fraud, fight crime and terrorism, and streamline services and online payments. There are many different players involved, both from government, as well as the private sector. And everyone agrees that innovation and collaboration between all stakeholders is vital. The mere idea of a large-scale open source, decentralised ID scheme has created a fresh batch of challenges, threats, privacy concerns, public-private partnerships, and of course…..new business opportunities.

If you read the news, it looks like the Department of Human Services (DHS) will use their “myGov IdP” solution to become the exclusive provider of Govpass IDs. However, there is no limit on the number of ID providers that can be accredited for Govpass. For example, Australia Post looks set to become the first non-government ID provider, using its own Digital iD platform.

The Digital ID Show Conference & Expo is a strategic-level meet-up running alongside Australia’s largest and longest running annual ICT in government event: the 12th annual Technology in Government Expo. Each August, thousands of government ICT professionals and leading thinkers come together in Canberra to discuss the latest ICT developments and challenges impacting federal, state and local government.

About the Digital ID Show

The Digital ID Show is the first major conference and expo for Digital Identity in Australia, co-located with Australia’s largest and longest running annual ICT in government event: the 12th Annual Technology in Government Expo and the Cyber Security in Government Conference. The Digital ID Show aims to explore the bigger questions underpinning digital identity and the roll out of digital identity in Australia.
