Leighton Archer, Head of Learning Experience, Wavelength

Leighton leads Wavelength’s Learning Experience Design team, overseeing the discovery and design of learning experience across both the public and private sectors. Acting as the conduit between learners, clients, and our designers and developers, Leighton strives to bring the best from a variety of disciplines — psychology, education, business, design, and technology — to the design process.

Leighton’s a huge advocate of a human-centred design, and has applied this approach to the design and development of learning solutions across topics like leadership, onboarding, compliance, system training, and more.

After hours, you can find Leighton reading up on design, or practising his cocktail-making and photography skills.

We so often hear that L&D designers and consultants struggle to be heard; that their work and their expertise falls on deaf ears.

While performance consulting and understanding the business gets our foot in the door, I argue that a broader skillset – incorporating cognitive psychology, design thinking, UX and more – lends far greater credibility to learning design, and ultimately, leads to better learning experiences.

KEY TAKEAWAYS:- The psychology of learning- The argument for empathy in design- None of it matters if people don't use it
