Dr. Bjarki Johannesson is a Senior Research Investigator at The New York Stem Cell Foundation - Research Institute, where he leads the diabetes program. His work focuses on using patient-derived induced pluripotent stem cells to accelerate the understanding and treatment of diabetes. Specifically, he has developed automated, high-throughput methods for the standardized creation of insulin-producing pancreatic beta islets for use in high-content disease modeling and drug screening.
Dr. Johannesson received his PhD from the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Germany and worked for two years as a postdoctoral fellow in the group of Prof. Nadia Rosenthal at EMBL Italy. He joined NYSCF in 2013 as a postdoctoral fellow in the group of Dr. Dieter Egli where he helped generate and characterize the first SCNT embryonic stem cells from adult T1D diabetes patients, and in 2014 he was awarded a NYSCF – Druckenmiller Postdoctoral Fellowship. In 2015 Dr. Johannesson became an independent researcher in the NYSCF Research Institute.
