The Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization (VIDO) is one of the world’s largest and most advanced containment facilities and is internationally recognized for its role in infectious disease research and vaccine development. Based at the University of Saskatchewan, VIDO has conducted infectious disease research and vaccine development for almost half a century – commercializing eight vaccines with six being described as ‘world-firsts’. During the COVID-19 pandemic, VIDO tested more than 500 medicines for organizations worldwide. The organization’s 200+ personnel operate using an ISO9001 certified management system. Current infrastructure includes BSL2, BSL3, BSL3-Ag containment with an integrated BSL3 capable GMP vaccine manufacturing facility.  As part of its expansion to enhance pandemic preparedness, VIDO is adding BSL4 capacity and a new BSL2 animal housing facility. This facility will be able to handle a wide range of species, from small disease vectors to bison. VIDO is also an active participant in several international networks, including the CEPI Animal Model Network, INTERCEPTOR, RAV3N, and NATO DIANA, and holds multiple NIH contracts for preclinical animal models and biomanufacturing.
