Outi Vaarala, MD, PhD, is a Senior Director Research, Respiratory, Inflammation and Autoimmunity, at Medimmune/AstraZeneca in Gaithersburg, MD, USA. She is leading the discovery of mechanisms to rebalance the immune system in COPD for a better host defense, and the research activities on the role of respiratory microbiome in pediatric asthma and COPD. She has published more than 200 peer-reviewed scientific articles.
Outi Vaarala first joined AstraZeneca in 2014 as Head of Translational Science in IMED RIA. Prior to that she was Research Professor and the Head of Department of Vaccinations and Immune Protection at the National Institute for Health and Welfare, Helsinki, Finland. She is trained in medicine at the University of Helsinki, Finland, and received her MD in 1990 and Ph.D. in Immunology in 1991. In 2001 she became Professor of Pediatric Immunology at the Linköping University, Sweden. In 2005-2014 Outi has also worked as a permanent expert at the European Medical Agency.
