Having spent his career leveraging technology for the strategic advantage of large private corporations, Michael McNamara made the move to the Australian Public Service in January 2019, when he was appointed the Chief Information Officer of Services Australia.
Since joining Services Australia, Michael has led the implementation of a new transformation focused operating model for the Technology Services Group which is helping guide Services Australia to be a leading service delivery organisation. During the COVID-19 pandemic, under Michael’s leadership, Services Australia digitised critical government payments and claims to support millions of dollars in relief packages for Australians in need. In addition, Michael ensured Services Australia staff were able to work remotely and continue to deliver government services—increasing internal platforms and access to ICT equipment three-fold.
Prior to this, Michael shaped his executive skills around the digital banking paradigm. He spent nearly seven years at ANZ undertaking roles such as General Manager of Architecture, Delivery Services and Business Management Division and Head of Employee and Workplace Experience Transformation. During this period, he was responsible for technology strategy, application and infrastructure architecture, solution design, investment planning, IT budget management, global testing, workforce planning and the delivery of shared services. A highlight was leading the $200m transformation of ANZ’s enterprise-wide technology infrastructure.
Additionally, Michael has extensive international experience having worked in the Middle East, Germany, United States, United Kingdom and Ireland. He found his work in Bahrain particularly fascinating, learning about the sensitivities, culture and operating methods in the Middle East. From enhanced customer experience and increased employee productivity, to building new digital products and services for the API economy, Michael has hands on experience in designing and implementing the digital change agenda.
He’s passionate about leading, developing and inspiring large diverse teams to embrace opportunities, and working with management boards to build the case for digital change.
Outside of work, Michael likes to spend time with family and friends, as well as reading and traveling extensively. His most important leadership role continues to be fatherhood, a role that remains both a challenge and inspiration.
