Kayelle Drinkwater leads the Data Policy Branch in the Department of Industry, Science, Energy and Resources. In this Chief Data Officer type role, she oversees data strategy, governance and management, spatial data policy, location services and reporting. Kayelle also has a special interest in growing data literacy for teams and employees outside of specialist data roles.
In addition to running a data service, Kayelle was recently appointed one of the Department's Disability Champions. Her active commitment in DISER's Disability and Wellness Network and the Autism Talent Program, are an important part or promoting equity in the workplace through diversity and inclusion.
Kayelle says this is such a critical time to be in the data space with rapid leaps in technology, the growing data and digital agendas, both in Australia and overseas. Turning data into easy to understand information for businesses and citizens is becoming a core skill in many roles. We need data more than we ever have before.
Prior to joining the Department of Industry, Innovation and Science, Kayelle was a senior leader in the Department of Finance. Kayelle’s roles have encompassed governance and transformation including data and digital projects, public financial management, legislation and policy, Communications, internal and external information technology service delivery, cybersecurity and whole of government IT procurements in the then, Australian Government Information Management Office. Kayelle has also undertaken corporate roles to gain breadth of experience.
Previously, Kayelle worked in the Department of Health on a wide range of health policy initiatives and programs. Kayelle holds post-graduate qualifications in health and information technology.
