Lorenzo Montrasio, Member of Volrethics Steering Committee, Former Council of Europe

In 2024, the Minister of Family, Birth, and Equal Opportunities of Italy designated Lorenzo as his expert on anti-discrimination, focusing on health equity. From 2020 to 2023, Lorenzo led the work on access to innovative treatments and technologies at the Council of Europe, developing legal standards for human rights protection. From 2018 to 2020, he coordinated the international Blood Quality cooperation program at the European Pharmacopeia (EDQM). Formerly as a regulator, Lorenzo was Head of the Biological Medicines Office at the Italian Medicines Agency (AIFA), entrusted with the assessment and authorization of new biological medicines, including ATMP, vaccines, and blood-derived medicines (2011 to 2018). As Senior GMP inspector (2003-2010), he contributed to ensuring quality and resilience to the manufacturing and supply in hospital and manufacturing sites for the public and private sector (2003-2010). Lorenzo studied Pharmacy (1990-1995), Clinical Pharmacy (1998-2001), and Regulatory Affairs (2001-2005). During his career, he has been chair and member of working groups and steering committees at international organizations such as the EMA, the WHO, and the EC. Lorenzo collaborates with universities, NGOs, and professional and patient organizations to facilitate dialogue and support projects to develop the quality of products and equity in their access.
