Bryce Butler is an Automation Engineer II at Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research, operated by Leidos Biomedical Research Inc. in support of the National Cancer Institute, where he builds and maintains the automated systems behind patient derived organoid drug screening. He is currently helping develop new automated platforms for the NIH Standardized Organoid Modeling (SOM) Center.
His work spans the full path from plate to result. On the hardware side, he integrates bulk reagent dispensers, acoustic liquid handlers, automated incubators, multimode plate readers, high content imagers, and high throughput multicamera array microscopes under scheduling platforms including Green Button Go and Thermo Momentum, and he designs custom instrumentation and transport hardware where no commercial option fits the workflow. On the software side, he develops the image analysis pipelines that turn brightfield images into segmented organoid measurements using deep learning models trained on in house screening data, along with the Oracle based data infrastructure and internal review tools that put those results in front of the scientists who requested them.
That combination gives him a working view of both sides of the build or buy question, from evaluating vendor platforms and integration paths to maintaining the code and hardware a lab comes to depend on. Bryce holds an M.S. in Biomedical Engineering from Georgia Tech and a B.S. from Florida Tech.
