Mary Millard speaking at World Antimicrobial Resistance Congress

Mary Millard, Sepsis Survivor,
AMR Patient Advocate

What do you see as the biggest challenges facing the AMR space into 2022?

I see one of the biggest challenges is that Covid has swarmed the world’s attention away from AMR and may continue to do so in 2022. Along with that the lack of new novel therapies and antibiotic development is a concern for any patient with an HAI. Also, the challenge of federal funding for antibiotic development as the budget deficit grows.

If you could wave a magic wand, what would you like to see occur in the coming year to further combat AMR?

I would like to see more being done in the realm of prevention. With a magic wand we could saved thousands of lived a year. Prevention of any infection is the key to patient longevity.

Healthcare facilities would all upgrade infrastructure and front-line workers such as EVS would be much better trained on sanitation and disinfection.

What would you like to highlight about your work/your organization for this coming year?

I would like to see more being done in the realm of prevention. With a magic wand we could saved thousands of lived a year. Prevention of any infection is the key to patient longevity.

Do you have any predictions for the AMR space in 2022 and beyond? Any calls-to-action you’d like to highlight?

I would say that in 2022 AMR will once again be front and center in world and local organizations. A call to action I have been privileged to participate with in the not so far past is the PEW Health patient fly into congress. Patients en masse visit committees, congress members, and people involved in budgeting for AMR. A most important annual rally.
