The Bill & Melinda Gates foundation was founded on the principle that ‘every person deserves the chance to live a healthy, productive life.’ Although great progress has been made, the foundation has identified that more still needs to be done: the global mortality rate may have decline by half over the past 50 years, but 1500 people die every hour in developing countries, and frighteningly around half of them are children under 5. The foundation’s Global Programs target disease and living conditions, aiming to create and deliver vaccines for infectious diseases. Kim Bush, Deputy Director, Industry Partnerships for Global Health, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation believes that the traditional business model does not match global health and delivery challenges, however, this does present an opportunity to the vaccine industry. By building partnerships, through global collaboration and effective coordination with other funders, global health success is possible.
