Though the gargantuan task of connecting everything that will eventually comprise the Internet of Things (IoT) is still firmly in its infancy, especially in aviation circles, use of the phrase “connected aircraft” has expanded over the past 12-18 months. Partly to help underpin the business case for in-flight connectivity (IFC), there is a growing desire among airlines to use the connectivity pipe not just to provide a service to passengers, but to also help realise greater operational efficiencies. Connected aircraft applications that will re-shape airlines’ businesses as well as reinvent the passenger experience include real-time credit and debit card verification, in-flight telemedicine, connected electronic flight bag (EFB) and live weather, CRM/ERP integration, flight tracking, aircraft health monitoring and predictive maintenance, connected crew and more.
